Plantar fasciitis occurs most often either as an acute or a semi-acute injury. The ligament that runs along the heel to the toe, called the plantar fascia, becomes strained or ruptured. The condition afflicts mostly athletes and those who are avid exercisers. Pain symptoms can disrupt everyday activity as the plantar fascia becomes tender and swollen. The condition can be caused by improper footwear and constant stress on the feet from strenuous activity. When treating plantar fasciitis, take time to rest properly and see your doctor.

What is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is the inflammation of the thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot, known as the plantar fascia, and causes mild to severe heel pain.

What Causes Plantar Fasciitis?

·      Excessive running

·      Non-supportive shoes

·      Overpronation

·      Repeated stretching and tearing of the plantar fascia

How Can It Be Treated?

·      Conservative measures – anti-inflammatories, ice packs, stretching exercises, physical therapy, orthotic devices

·      Shockwave therapy – sound waves are sent to the affected area to facilitate healing and are usually used for chronic cases of plantar fasciitis

·      Surgery – usually only used as a last resort when all else fails. The plantar fascia can be surgically detached from the heel

While very treatable, plantar fasciitis is definitely not something that should be ignored. Anthony Davis provided an update on his ankle injury in early October, stating that he was rehabbing his injury. “It’s steady improving every day and I’m trying to figure out what I can and cannot do and then go from there. When I feel ready and able to get back on the floor, I’ll be back on the floor. We’re constantly checking on it every day,” he said. The Pelicans announced that Davis’s Grade 2 ankle injury sprain recovery could be as long as 2 weeks.

How Does an Ankle Sprain Occur?

Ankle sprains take place when the ligaments in your ankle are torn or stretched beyond their limits. There are multiple ways that the ankle can become injured, including twisting or rolling over onto your ankle, putting undue stress on it, or causing trauma to the ankle itself.

What are the Symptoms?

  • Mild to moderate bruising
  • Limited mobility
  • Swelling
  • Discoloration of the skin (depending on severity)

Preventing a Sprain

  • Wearing appropriate shoes for the occasion
  • Stretching before exercises and sports
  • Knowing your limits can aid in prevention

Treatment of a sprain depends on the severity.  Many times, people are told to rest and remain off their feet completely, while others are given an air cast. If the sprain is very severe, surgery may be required.

Michael Frazier II of the Florida Gators has missed seven consecutive games due his high ankle sprain. The high scorer has been missed by his team and has not even been cleared to join practice. Coach Billy Donovan has stated that the guard has been experiencing pain while starting stopping and cutting. “I don’t anticipate him playing unless I got some miraculous diagnosis from our trainer and doctor that say he’s cleared to play,” Donovan stated.

He announced the injury during the UFC 172 press conference after the fight, and also uploaded a picture of his x-ray to his Instagram page.

Rockhold, who is currently ranked fifth in the world, will take a few weeks off to allow the toe to recover, which is usually standard procedure following a match anyway.

What to Know About a Broken Toe

Although most people try to avoid foot trauma such as banging, stubbing, or dropping heavy objects on their feet, the unfortunate fact is that it is a common occurrence. Given the fact that toes are positioned in front of the feet, they typically sustain the brunt of such trauma. When trauma occurs to a toe, the result can be a painful break (fracture). Another type of trauma that can break a toe is repeated activity that places stress on the toe for prolonged periods of time.
 

Symptoms of a Broken Toe

  • throbbing pain
  • swelling
  • bruising on the skin and toenail
  • the inability to move the toe with ease.
  • toe appears crooked or disfigured
  •  tingling or numbness in the toe
  • injured person experiences fever or chills throughout their body, and when there is an open, bleeding wound present on the toe.

Generally, a minor toe break will heal without long-term complications, but it is important to discontinue activities that put pressure on the toe. It is best to stay off of the injured toe with the affected foot elevated on pillows. Swelling can be alleviated by placing an ice pack on the broken toe for 15 minutes every two hours during the first two days after the fracture.

al jeffersonCharlotte Bobcats’ center Al Jefferson injured his foot while playing against the Miami Heat in Game 1 earlier this month.  He told reporters that he heard something rip, but was only off the court briefly.  He took some painkiller shots, and finished the game with 18 points and 10 rebounds.

As usual, twitter circulated news of the injury:  Jefferson clarified: he needed two painkiller shots to continue to play today.  Then added: “I don’t like needles.”

Jefferson was diagnosed with a strain (which is actually a mild tear) to his plantar fascia, the connective tissue that runs between the heel and toes.  Injury to that tissue is known to be incredibly painful, and its impact on Jefferson’s performance was visible.  Miami ended up winning the game 99-88.

Playing Sports with Foot Injuries

Many types of foot injuries affect athletes over the course of their athletic career.   • Turf toe- upward bending of the big toe outside normal range of motion
  • Stress Fractures

  • Strains

There are many types of treatments that are necessary to keep the injury from becoming more serious. Ice is often used to reduce swelling and inflammation while applying a compression bandage can help reduce pain and stress on the foot. For more serious injuries it is recommended to consult with a podiatrist or orthopedic specialist as fractures and other serious conditions may require surgery.
